The Moen Family Tree
Home

This page is dedicated to family photos either prior to James and Rose or of their brothers and sisters.  See many of their photos below.

November 2002 - About a week ago I received some fantastic information in the mail.  Our cousin, Lynne Glover from Arizona, had some work done on the Syverud side of the family tree and was able to get that line all the way back to Halvord I. Gulsvic who was born about the year 1260!!!  We now have a total of 25 generations spanning 740 years.  I will work over the next couple of weeks to get all of this information into the family database and then on to the website.

September 2001 - Recently I spent a few days in Madison doing some more research on our family tree.  After quite a few hours I, along with the help of one of the people working at the genealogy center, hit pay dirt and was able to get some more information.  Previous to this I was never able to get any further back than Barbro Knudson, whose real last maiden name was Knudtsdatter.

First there was Juul Knudson (our great-great-great-great-great grandfather) who was born in 1749.  He married Ingri Syversdatter who was born in 1763.  They had four children: Knudt (our great-great-great-great grandfather), Syvert, Ingabor and Turi.  Knudt Juulson was born in 1781.  He married Anne Andresdatter.  On December 27, 1811, Barbro (our great-great-great grandmother) was born.

Barbro Knudsdatter was born in Norway in 1811.  She married a man by the name of Niels Nielson and they had several children.  Niels passed away at the age of 40 and Barbro later married a man by the name of Sever Lien.  They had a couple of children and then moved to the United States and settled near Blue Mounds, WI.  Barbro Lien was a very early member of the Perry Lutheran Church in Daleyville were she is buried.  I couldn't find any record of Sever, he is not buried in the Perry Church Cemetary.  Most of their descendants live in Minnesota.

We are descendants of her children with Niels Nielson.  Barbro and Niels had a daughter named Ranghild (our great-great grandmother) who was born in 1838.  Ranghild married Ole Syverud.  One of their children was Berthe Syvrud (our great grandmother) who was born on March 30, 1863.  She married Henry Knudson in 1888 and their first born child was Rose Mable Knudson - our grandmother.

With this new information, and with the birth of Hunter Moen, our family tree now spans two and a half centuries and eleven generations.  I'll keep working on this and hopefully one day we can get even further back.  We have to keep in mind though that this is just Grandma Moen's mothers side of the family.  I have to one day start on her father's side and then both side's of Grandpa Moen's family.

Kathy Stephens sent me this photo that shows the funeral wreathes and a photo of "Grandmother Knudson's Grandmother" (that is what is written on the back of the photo).   Grandmother Knudson would be Berthe Syvrud and her grandmother would be Barbro Knudson (assuming this was her mother's mother) I am trying to find another photo of Barbro to see if they look the same.  If they are, this photo would be from her funeral in 1894.

I thought it would be interesting to take the photos of my mom, her mother, and her grandmother from when they were about the same ages (at least as close in age as I could get) and put them together for comparison.   What do you think?

I have no idea who the woman in the photo is, but the interesting thing here is that the old photo album that she is resting her arm on is one that came from the home of Rose Mabel (Knudson) Moen when she died.  It had belonged to her mother, Berthe (Syvrud) Knudson.  A photo of the album as it is today is on the right.  I wish I knew whatever happened to the table.  There are many photos in the book, but none of them have any names. (Except for one - the name Berbe(?) Syversind and date 8/13/1882 is written on the back of one photo.  I have not been able to match the name up to anyone in our family yet). Some of the photos were taken in Mt. Horeb, some in Madison, and some of them were taken in Norway.   Many people have told me that Beulah Nelson probably knew who many of them were.  I guess I will have to do some investigating and see if I can find the names of the people in the photos and then match the names to some of those in our family tree.  If anyone knows of someone or somewhere I can go to get some help on this, please let me know.

NEW FOUND RELATIVE!!!!  In November of 2000,  I received an email from Lynn Glover of Tucson, Arizona.   She had visited this website and saw some of her relatives names listed in the descendant tree below.  Her grandfather,  Nels Syvrud and our great grandmother, Berthe Syvrud (Grandma Moen's mother) were brother and sister.  Lynn's mother - Ida Syvrud - and our Grandma Moen would be 1st cousins.   She was kind enough to send me her family information which I have added below.  She has a couple of old family photographs that she said she will send me copies of and I will put them on the website.  Since this is from the same branch of the family that the old photograph album of Berthe's is from, maybe we will be able to match up some of the people on the album.  I will keep you updated.

This is a photograph of Nels Syvrud and his family taken about 1915-1920.
left to right: Hanna Swenson Syvrud (b. 1877), Otto Syvrud (b. 1899), Ida Syvrud (b. 1901), Nels Syvrud (b. 1871)

John, Anton, Inga Knudson and Marit Enderson
Brothers, sister and mother of Henry Knudson.
Henry's father's first name was Knud so that made Henry and his brother's last name Knudson. Not sure if Inga's last name was Knudsdatter or not.
Anton was born in 1870 and he looks about 15 so photo was probably taken around 1885.

January 2003 - Our cousin Beverly Schweirski of Madison (her grandfather was a brother of our great-grandfather Henry Knudson) sent this photo to me a couple of days ago.  It is the only photo I have ever seen of our great-great-grandmother Marit (Henry's mother).  In the old photo album that I have (the one with all of the old photos with no names) there is another photo of Anton so this is the first name I have ever been able to put with one of those photos (see Early Family page).  Since Berthe had put her name in the front of the old photo album, I had always assumed the photos were of her side of the family (Syvrud).  Now I am thinking the photos are either of Henry's side (Knudson) or maybe both.

Below is a group of photos that I scanned from the old photo album mentioned above that belonged to Berthe Syvrud Knudson (our great-grandmother).  The entire book is filled with photos similar to these and none of them have any names.  They are great to look at though so I thought this would be a great way to share them.  There are about 20 more photos that I'll scan in some day soon when I get time.  If you ever come across some way that we could identify any of these, please don't hesitate to let me know.
